Ways to help

We thought that we would give people who are interested a list of ways and areas in which one can help.  Mostly funds are required to help with various projects and equipment that is used to help us run better and benefit the children the best way possible.

Volunteers:

In general Akanyijuka’s day to day running is looked after by local staff employed from the surrounding areas, this we believe gives the children an ability to fit into society better.  However volunteers are welcome, we have even had people just come to be with the children and see what we are doing, or visit their sponsor children.  Here is a list of areas in which one might like to consider volunteering:

  • Headmaster/Teacher: This would be of assistance to help increase the standard of education beyond that of the local curriculum and teaching methods.  Our teachers do a fantastic job with what they have been given, but unfortunately they simply do not have opportunity to learn of different and often better teaching methods.  A volunteer to assist in this area would be greatly appreciated.
  • Tradesmen/labourers: I have found that trying to implement methods of building that we use back in Australia, simply do not work because the resources are not there.  This being said I have found it extremely rewarding to work alongside the locals doing things their way.  It is most likely that we will build in a local manner and use local workers to do the work, but volunteers are welcome to join in when we are going through building phases (contact to find out when these are).  Also someone may wish to help by coming to install a water system, or solar energy (electricity or hot water) if they would be able to find the time and funds.

Of course we are always open to hearing about your ideas also, as we do not know it all, that’s for sure!

Projects:

Current projects that we are looking into are:

  • Chickens, currently up and running with layers (looking to work with broilers also once provision comes for a deep freezer)
  • Goat rearing
  • Getting electricity to the site

Items:

Various items that may help in the running of Akanyijuka are:

  • A motorcycle
  • A 4wd Pick-up
  • A small truck to help reduce building costs
  • There are also many smaller items that are needed from time to time (bicycle, furniture etc)

 Sponsorship:

All our children have sponsors, but in the future as we grow we will require more.  If you are interested in getting on a waiting list please contact us and we can put you in contact with the right people.  Or maybe you might be interested in other projects we are associated with, in Bolivia & India.

There are also opportunities to help us expand & move into our own property by helping with building costs for a home or classroom.

    • Jenny Thanks for your responding to our page. Sorry that it has not been updated for a long time. My wife, Kathryn, and I are in Australia at the moment so we had lots of preparations for leaving so the blog got rather neglected. The project is funded fully through our home church in Brisbane, Australia. Each child has a sponsor that give around $40 dollars a month, but our church adds extra on top of that to help give them a better life also. The church we go to has a web site http://www.oasiscc.org.au. I would love to tell you more about our work, but struggle with trying to put them in an email, but feel free to ask us any more questions about anything we do. GB Dave G
