London and Paris – Shock to the systems

October 23, 2008

Wow, what a difference.  Everything is different.  The people look, talk, relate, act and sound different.  The sights are completely different – not a thing is the same at all.  Getting around, where people live – everything is different, but the biggest and best difference has definitely got to be for the digestive system!!!  Food, glorious food!! It is a huge change for anyone going from one country to another.  But the biggest change was coming from our lives in Africa to western society.

Sorry to Pete and Amie, friends we stayed with in London, as I was quite a bit spaced out from leaving Uganda and Akanyijuka; it took pretty much my whole time there to start to feel relaxed and actually have good conversations.  It was, however, definitely a good idea to have a holiday first before coming home to be confronted with home in Australia.  We did actually enjoy our time in London, it was good to be able to see the sights, and a little of how people live there.  It actually made sense to me that Uganda was once a colony of England, there were many little things that I thought strange coming from Australia, that now I see actually come from the English way of life.

Anyway, here are a few photos of our stay in London and Paris.

After many farewell dinners and outings with friends, many visits to the children at Akanyijuka, much running around doing last minute things, a long trip to Kampala on the horrendous roads and one last trip to our favourite restaurant in Kampala it was finally time for us to board a plane and fly out of Uganda.  We are heading to London to visit some friends there before returning to Australia for a holiday back there.  For those following our journeys I will do a few updates from time to time, including posting some photos from Akanyijuka that I have stored and coming; and keeping the site as up to date as possible with what is happening in Kabale. But for now it is goodbye Uganda and hello western world.

From normal life in Kabale:

Let’s see how we go hey!

October 1, 2008

Tuesday we moved out of where we were living for the last 18 months and back into the Wards’ place, where we first stayed when we came to Kabale.  But Wednesday was much more exciting as we took in the last two children that we had space for.

Both of the new children fit in well with their new home.  Isaac:

At first some were not too sure how to react with the new children:

But in the end it was happiness and good times all around:
