August 10, 2007

This afternoon when Phil & I went to pick up Kathryn we ended up staying and playing with the children for about 3/4 hour.  So not only did Kathryn have to work all day, but she also had to wait around for us to have some fun.  I took a stack of photo’s as Kathryn asked if I could get some photos of her class with their hats – see Kathryns post below for details.  I have uploaded the better photos to my flickr sight, they can be viewed here:

Then after this Kathryn still did not get to go home as we headed to the markets with Prossy to get some local bananas.  I went to help Prossy carry them the 100 meters to the car, but after about 10 meters she had stop as it was too much for her.  So I decided to bight the bullet and attempt to pick them up by myself, despite the fact that there were many locals loking on, was I setting myself up for an embarising moment or what.  It turned out that I could handle them ok by myself, but that did not stop everyone laughing at the Muzungu carring the heavy load, as soon as I walked around the corner and all the locals unloading a truck load of Bananas seemed to think I was the funniest thing they had seen all day or something.

Another Day With My Precious Boys (Friday 10th August 2007)

August 10, 2007

This week was our third week of school and I have to say that my three boys have got into the routine fairly well over the past three weeks and especially considering I can speak very limited Rukiga (pronounced Luchiga).  They now understand the pattern of when they do and don’t have school.  Pamellah was telling me that sometimes on the days they don’t have class, Emmanuel says to her in the morning – “Teacher Kathryn is not coming today so I will stay in bed”.  Some days the language barrier is frustrating as I just want to be able to have a good general conversation with them about whatever they talk about.  About a million times a day they call out Teacher Kathryn, Teacher Kathryn! but then a lot of the time I am perplexed as to what they are telling me.  It is handy having Teacher Prossy just next door to come in and interpret for me sometimes. But . . .  I’ll get there!

Alex was precious today, he came up to me during an activity today and sat on my lap and put his little hands on my face and looked right into my eyes and said something in a sweet voice to me.  I have no idea what he said but it was a precious moment with the little fella!  I later thought that he probably put his hands on my face as that is what I do to him sometimes when I want his attention to tell him something.

Amongst the many activities in class today, we made paper hats.  Here are some photos of the beautifully hand crafted hats and their creators:
